Fire Department

The department currently has 4 Chief Officers, 2 Captains, 2 Lieutenant, 5 Sergeants, and 26 Firefighters operating 5 apparatus out of one station located at 316 East 3rd Street, right beside the Grayson Police Station.

Grayson Kentucky is located in the northeastern part of the state on Interstate 64 about 25 miles southwest of the Ohio and West Virginia borders. Named the “The Heart of the Parks”, Grayson is geographically located in the center of four of the Commonwealth’s most beautiful state parks – Grayson Lake, Carter Caves, Greenbo, and Yatesville.

The City of Grayson has a split ISO (Insurance Service Organization) Public Protection Classification rating (PPC) of 4/9. This rating has provided significant property insurance cost savings to home and business owners in and around Grayson. The split rating indicates that all properties inside the city limits and all areas outside the city, but within 5 miles of the fire station and have a fire hydrant within 1000 ft of the structure, receive a Class 4 rating. A Class 4 rating varies between different Insurance companies. It is up to each individual Insurance Company to determine the final rating for each residence insured. All other areas in the Grayson Fire Department response area receive a Class 9 rating. Class ratings fall in scale between 1 and 10, with a 10 being no recognized fire protection.

Grayson FD responds to approximately 500 calls annually. Calls for assistance may be to extinguish a structure on fire, or can be as mild as helping rescue an animal caught in a storm drain. Some incidents are as heart wrenching as extricating a person from a motor vehicle at a fatality accident. We strive to provide consistent and effective services to the City of Grayson and to our Carter County Response Area.

We’d like to thank all the people who have helped to support us financially. Though we are supported by the City of Grayson and financial gifts of local patrons, our biggest contributions come from the men and women who volunteer their time and expertise to serve the community and are willing to risk their life for their neighbor. We look forward to our service in the community in the future and we ask that you THINK SAFETY. If we meet in the coming year let it be at our Memory Days BBQ, Carter County Fair, Fire Prevention, and/or Christmas light show.

Grayson Fire Department has dedicated its years in service to quickly and effectively responding to local emergencies. We hope our services are never needed but we want to assure you we are equipped and trained to handle and alleviate any emergency. We are here to help, protect, and serve our community 24 hours a day.

The Grayson Kentucky Fire Department was established as a volunteer department in 1933 and remains fully volunteer. Though membership fluctuates from time to time, we currently have members that have been with the department for over 30 years. The department’s district covers approximately 90 square miles of suburban and rural areas surrounding the city limits of Grayson, as well as mutual aid with neighboring communities.
